Settled around 1650 by Puritans and others who resisted the Virginia Governor's demands that they attend the Church of England services, Anne Arundel began as a small settlement across the Severn River from Annapolis (now the Capitol of Maryland and in the County of Anne Arundel. With a population of approximately 490,000, and a population density of 1,177 per square mile, there is room for growth, but there are still many rural areas of the county.
