The Chesapeake Bay is an ESTUARY meaning the salt water from the Atlantic Ocean mixes with the fresh water of the rivers, creeks and creeks that flow into the bay. The bay is about 200 miles long when measured from Virginia Beach, VA all the way to the head of the bay in the Cecil County area. At the mouth of the Potomac River, the bay spans about 35 miles wide. The bay is estimated to contain about 15 trillion gallons of water. These waters are home to some very exciting game fish and fishing is a major contribution to the economy of Maryland.

For a body of water as huge as the Chesapeake Bay, it is quite shallow. Averaging 21 feet deep, many areas are easily navigable by row boat for local fishing close to the shorelines. The deepest areas are about 170 feet deep.

One reason the Chesapeake Bay offers so much to the waterfront real estate market, fishing and boating activities and the natural beauty of the water is that the Chesapeake bay and tribal tributaries have almost 12,000 miles of shoreline. The bay is abundant with plants, fish, animals including about 350 species of fish for your fishing enjoyment. Shellfish are popular, especially the Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab, popular with Maryland residents. Waterfowl take residence either year round or in season for migrating birds, the most popular is the Canada Goose. About one million waterfowl winter in and around the Chesapeake Bay each year.

Fresh water entering the bay comes from the Susquehanna River, and the over 100 additional rivers, creeks and streams. Many have waterfront communities offering wonderful opportunities for views of the sunsets, sunrises, water sports, beaches, boating and everything for which folks buy water oriented real estate in Maryland.
