GETTING AROUND ON LAND IN SOUTHERN MARYLAND
The maps on this page will show you major roads and highways in Southern Maryland all lead to water. Your water front home will be conveniently located near major roads since these counties are not congested and automobile travel, the mode of transportation other than by boat, is surprisingly easy.

The main highway through Anne Arundel County is Route 50, going east-west. But, major cross county roads have made travel to many employment centers very convenient. Traffic is not bad and these roads move quickly even in rush hour. This lovely county borders the Chesapeake Bay and has several major river water ways for water front homes, the Severn, the Magothy, the South and the Rhode. There is a lot of water front real estate in Anne Arundel County.

The main highway through Charles County is Route 301. Traversing the county from north to south and across the Potomac River, this is a major highway that is an alternative to Route 95 and the congestion of the Washington Beltway. Charles has major residential areas in the center of the county, but also some lovely waterfront communities along the Potomac River.

This is easy. Route 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue extended) goes directly through Calvert County from north to south and across the Patuxent River into St. Mary's County. This county is very rural and very beautiful with little development and the residents plan to keep it that way. Calvert County is bordered on the east by the Chesapeake Bay and on the west by the Patuxent River.

Forget traffic jams in this rural county. Unless you are at the main gate of the Patuxent River Naval Air Station at 4:00 p.m., you won't see much traffic here. There are several lovely water front communities and the distance from major employment centers makes real estate in St. Mary's the most affordable area. Bordered by the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River, this county offers a lot of "big water".
